The medieval society
Vilafranca had a strong growth during the second half of the twelfth
century. The situation of Vilafranca as an important land route between Muslim
and Christian lands became essential for its development. Because of this
relevance, King Alfons I transferred the notary rights to the Church in 1188.
Thanks to the coincidence of religious events with fairs and markets and the granted

The medieval centre
The town centre was located around the original Santa Maria Parish, the
first church to join the Gothic style in architecture.
Other important buildings were built during the period, such as the
Convent of Sant Francesc, of a mendicant order; the Chapel of Sant Joan, of a
military order; and other buildings associated with some memorable events of
the history of Catalunya. The king Pere III the Great died in the Palau Reial.
According to tradition, it was in the Palau Baltà where was signed the Vilafranca
Agreement in 1461, which triggered the civil war between the Crown and the
Generalitat government in the fifteenth century.
